How to get rid of mold

What is mold?

It is a specific type of fungi. It occurs when food decomposes, and in the soil, and destroys the materials on which it forms. It is attracted to damp spaces, so it is not surprising if you find it in the bathroom: humidity promotes active growth.

Mold thrives in places that provide it with the right conditions:

  • nutrients (food)
  • A good place for it to grow
  • Moisture

The health effects of mold

Not all mold is dangerous to health, but some household species can cause problems. They range from allergies and respiratory infections to the development of tumors.

If you are constantly exposed to mold - remember to wear a mask to filter the air you breathe. If you’re not regularly exposed to mold, it can still be toxic to your body. Even small exposures to these toxins can be detrimental to your health.

A recent large European multicenter study showed a link between mold exposure and asthma symptoms. Another study by the EPA and Berkeley National Laboratory found that “Of the 21.8 million people with asthma in the United States, approximately 4.6 million cases were attributed to dampness and mold in the home.”

Home mold is divided into three categories - A, B, and C. Category A mold (this includes Aspergillus and Stachybotrys) is also known as black mold and is the most dangerous to health. They must be removed immediately. This must be done by specialists. Category B molds are not toxic, but pose a risk to allergy sufferers. It includes Cladosporium, Penicillium and Alternaria. Category C molds are associated with a risk of allergies, but they can damage anything in the home. An example would be Ulocladium.

Here’s a recipe that will get rid of non-toxic mold (species that don’t spread mycotoxins) effectively and quickly. So what is this secret ingredient? Tea tree oil. It has been used for centuries. It is now used in many applications.

To fight mold, you will need:

  • 2 teaspoons of tea tree oil.
  • 2 cups water
  • cotton cloth
  • An empty spray bottle.

Preparation and application of the remedy:

  1. Pour two teaspoons of oil and two cups of water into a bottle, close the lid and shake.
  2. Spray the solution on the areas affected by mold and leave it for several hours.
  3. Using a cotton cloth, wipe all treated areas thoroughly. Sometimes air drying rather than cloth drying is used with this method. Repeat 2-3 times.

This method is quite simple, but very effective. However, if you suspect mold has spread where you can’t see it, or has grown to an alarming size, be sure to contact a professional!
