The paper clip is a stationery item that everyone has held at least once. But people think little about who invented it, and something connected what interesting events with this minor detail for fastening documents.
The emergence of different models of paper clips
Scientists have long puzzled over how to shape the paper clip so it would be versatile. It took many decades. But now paper clips are familiar to everyone in the form in which they do not crumple the paper and fasten documents reliably. The most familiar form is “Gem” or “Gem”. It is the form most often found in the offices of organizations around the world. Gem Manufacturing Ltd developed it, which launched it on the mass market. But we assign staples different functions. It was noticed that “Gem” was not good at stapling large amounts of paper. That’s when the “Ideal” model was born. This happened in 1902, and a few months later such staples began to be produced for consumers. “Owl” is not quite usual in its appearance model. They shape it like the outline of two bird’s eyes. It provides a firm fastening of various papers. Producing for the mass market “Owl” began in 1908. There are kinds, which fasten documents more reliably. They have special notches at the end. These are “Non Skid” paper clips. These were first produced in 1924.
Who invented the paper clip?
Many people think that the paper clip was invented by Johann Wohler. In 1899 he made the first sketches that looked a lot like a modern paper clip. Two years later he was about to patent the invention, but discovered that they had beaten him. Gem Manufacturing of Britain had got the exclusive rights to the paper clip and had already produced the product. In 1899, in America, a resident of the country named Middlebrook received a patent for the invention. But the founders of Gem Manufacturing immediately bought his rights.
Interesting fact: The most expensive paper clip costs almost $200. The designers of Prada created it. I design the clip for money; it is made of pure silver, and the company’s brand logo is printed inside.
Gem-clips, as the company called them, immediately became popular. This is connected with the fact that at the beginning of the 20th century in all developed countries there was a significant growth in the flow of documents. Business owners massively bought stationery to ensure good and fast binding of papers.
